Local Union Standing Committees are the tools through which policies and programs aimed at strengthening our Union are put to work.  They fulfill their responsibilities to the membership by implementing activities that advance the social, economic and political goals of the UAW.

The UAW Constitution and local by-laws establish local Union Standing Committees and their members are appointed by the President subject to the approval of the Executive Board.

These Committees are the backbone of our union activities.  Their objectives are accomplished through a mix of time that is donated and some that is compensated by the union.  Committee activists are often selected for other temporary assignments given us under the UAW/Ford contract.  The Committees meet 10 times per year with the meeting time at 3:15 pm.  If you are interested in serving on a Committee leave your name, shift, Dept. and zone for me in the Committee Room. Also indicate which Committees you are interested in. If you have a question call me at ext. 60240 or from an outside line by dialing 651-696-0510 Ext. 1and leave a message for me and I'll come out to your job.

Our Local has the following Standing Committees:

Union Label/Organizing Committee of our Local Union has been assigned the task of assisting in Union Organizing drives.  During the last two years our Committee has worked on four UAW drives in Minnesota and some of its members have traveled around the country to help in union organizing.

Citizenship and Legislative Committee is the work site political-legislative arm of the local union and is the vital workplace political activator.  While Community Action Program (CAP) priorities are developed by Convention action and State CAP councils the local CAP Committee is the basic link with our members at work in assisting the implementation of voter registration and get-out-the-vote drives, dollar drives, letter writing campaigns, and publicizing the issues and positions of public officials.

Civil Rights Committee shall serve as guardian over the local union's commitment to assure members full rights regardless of religion, race, creed, color, sex, political affiliation, national origin, age or handicap.  The Committee informs members of steps and procedures, including filing of complaints and hearings, whenever a member or members believe their rights have been violated, either by management or other union members.  The Committee, in cooperation with the UAW Civil Rights Department, works toward the elimination of discrimination in the workplace, the community and the nation.

Community Services Committee performs the important job of getting help for members and their families in time of need.  They also work in the community for the benefit of those in need.  This Committee does the annual United Way drive and in case of a strike would handle strike insurance benefits.

TOP

Recreation Committee works to promote meaningful recreation and leisure-time activities.  Our Committee traditionally organizes a children's Halloween, Christmas and Easter Party.  They hold an adult Christmas Party and Summer Picnic.  They monitor and recommend funding for sports teams.

TOP

Conservation Committee works to correct environmental problems.  They hold the annual Earth Week Event.

TOP

Women's Committee is established for the purpose of promoting greater understanding of the UAW's policies and programs, and to further the objectives of our Union.  The Committee conducts programs, which are of special interest to women, and encourages them to become active.

TOP

Veterans Committee in each local union shall provide needed information to veterans and their families.  They should monitor all legislation dealing with veterans.

TOP

Education Committee is responsible for putting into operation the education mandate adopted by the UAW Convention delegates.   Materials are available to help inform the membership on issues and mobilize greater solidarity behind the programs of the union.

TOP

Strike Support Committee is responsible for working to build support for and assistance to labor strikes.

TOP

Constitution and Bylaws Committee of each Local Union is responsible for submitting original and/or amended bylaws provisions to the local union membership for discussion and approval.  This Committee shall monitor the required local union bylaws amendment procedure to insure compliance with current Bylaws and Constitutional provisions. Once the amended bylaws provisions have been approved by the local union membership, this Committee shall monitor the process to insure that the amendment is immediately submitted to the International Executive Board pursuant to Article 37, Section 3 of the Constitution.

Peer Support Committee, with the dislocated workers program, was formed to assist members thru the transition of the closing of the plant. The committee members are dedicated to helping their co-workers, but are not expert's, and they will refer individuals to a professional councilor.
