The GLC Food Bank provides over $2 million in food each year to senior high-rise residents in Hennepin County.
The Mission of the Food Bank has been to serve as a central clearinghouse for surplus food inventories to provide food for the hungry. The Food Bank secures food by soliciting donations of food from the food industry or purchasing food in bulk at significantly lower costs than retail.
Please Help A Senior, Consider a financial or food donation or volunteer at GLCFB to insure this vital program is maintained and Expanded.
The GLCFB has expanded to provide two supplemental services, both of which fill a major service gap for many people in Hennepin County they Are.
The ‘Budget-Stretcher‘ Program is the name for the storefront operation located at 554 8th Ave N in Minneapolis. The concept is simple; a portion of the bulk purchase items are offered for sale to the public at deeply discounted prices. The store is open Tues – Sat Call 612-340-9694 for specific hours. Anyone is welcome to shop.
The ‘Food for Life Program’ is a ground breaking project that essentially “brings a food shelf’ to low-income senior high-rises all over the county. 1500 – 2000 seniors receive this service twice per month, for a total of 3000 – 4000 opportunities to feed the hungry each month, Each person receives about $35.00 in food per visit. It runs almost entirely through the work of volunteers, primarily the seniors themselves!
A high-rise visit is coordinated by a resident volunteer, who arranges for the space, notifies other residents, then does the set-up and take down of the ‘food shelf’. In short, not only is food delivered, but the high-rise experiences a sense of community and cooperation.
This program helps people help people!
Expenses incurred by the food bank are increasing. Food purchasing, transportation, warehousing and operating coasts continue to rise.
Hennepin County provides support to GLCFB, but this does not meet all our financial program needs so we must raise additional funds.
The Food Bank is asking foundations, civic organizations, businesses and individuals to help meet its growing financial needs.
